This event brings the people of the White Mountain Apache Reservation to the nearby community of Pinetop-Lakeside to celebrate many aspects of their unique culture. It is a climax of a week of events highlighting the Apache language and Native art. Dances will include Crown Dancers, Warriors and a unique dance that depicts a hunter. Craft demonstrations will include the making of a traditional cradleboard, used by Apache mothers to carry an infant on their back. The building of a Gowa, or traditional Apache home, is fascinating. Oak saplings are bent to form the frame for the house. Narrow-leaf yucca is used to form the skin of the dwelling. Apache Spirit has toured the country for generations, with the Ethelbah family providing guitar virtuosity and a unique Reservation perspective on life.
