Sujo (2024), directed by Astrid Rondero and Fernanda Valadez, follows the haunting journey of a young boy named Sujo. Orphaned at just four years old after his father, a cartel gunman, is murdered, Sujo narrowly escapes death with the help of his aunt. Raised in isolation, he grows up in poverty and constant danger, marked by his father's violent legacy. As a teenager, Sujo succumbs to rebellion and joins the local cartel, following a grim rite of passage. As he matures, he struggles to break free from the cycle of violence in his small town, hoping for a new life in Mexico City. However, the shadow of his father's past forces him to confront the inescapable grip of his destiny. Winner of the World Cinema Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and selected as Mexico's official entry for the 2024 Academy Awards, Sujo offers a powerful and haunting look at the cycle of violence, survival, and identity in modern Mexico.
