Adopt A Crop seeks to raise awareness about the importance of protecting heirloom seeds in the Native Seeds/SEARCH seed bank collection. Many of the seeds in the collection are arid-adapted, heirloom varieties that are essential to farming - especially in the midst of a mega-drought.

Because these seeds have been stewarded for thousands of years by Indigenous communities in our region, they have adapted to our climate to use less water and they outperform many modern, modified seeds.

The successful grow-out of these seeds is critical to ensuring future quantities of seed, and in turn food, are available to backyard gardeners, community gardens, small-scale farmers, and Native American growers preserving traditional farming methods.

“Adopt a Crop brings awareness to the unique and diverse crops that Native Seeds/SEARCH stewards. It allows us to tell stories about these seeds and why preservation and sharing them is crucial to their continued existence. Growing, saving and sharing these seeds has, and continues to be, a community effort that ensures they will be around in the future.” stated NS/S Executive Director, Alexandra Zamecnik

Since its founding in 1983, Native Seeds/SEARCH has been dedicated to conserving and promoting the arid-adapted crop diversity of the Southwest in support of sustainable farming and food security.

Preserved in their seed bank today are nearly 2,000 varieties of corn, beans, squash, chiles and herbs - all adapted to the unique challenges of landscapes extending from southern Colorado to central Mexico.

The Native Seeds/SEARCH seed collection is an American cultural treasure, representing the cultural heritage and farming knowledge of over 50 indigenous communities, as well as recent immigrants like Spanish missionaries and Mormon homesteaders.
