Rosie the Riveter Trust is excited to announce an in-person, double-feature documentary event in recognition of both Juneteenth and FDR's Executive Order 8802, which prohibited discrimination in the US's defense industry.

The Trust will be presenting two films, Invisible Warriors — The African American Women in World War II, followed by a discussion with producer and director, Gregory S. Cooke, and No Time to Waste — The Urgent Mission of Betty Reid Soskin.

Invisible Warriors features real pioneers – the first Black women to work in industry and government administrative service.

The film is an unforgettable conversation among a diverse group of African American "Rosie the Riveters" who recount what life was really like during World War II. They are hard working underdogs of high character who do battle and win. They fled lives as domestics and sharecroppers to empower themselves while working in war production and U.S. government offices.

These patriotic pioneers share their wartime memories, recounting their battles against racism at home, Nazism abroad, and sexism everywhere.

They represent 600,000 women like themselves who overcame the Great Depression, Jim Crow, sexual degradation, and workplace discrimination to break gender and racial barriers. Black "Rosie the Riveters" were part of a sisterhood of 20 million women who built America's "arsenal of democracy." Without these women, the United States could not have won World War II. In 2020, Invisible Warriors was the recipient of the inaugural Library of Congress Lavine/Ken Burns Fellowship in partnership with the Better Angels Society.

No Time to Waste celebrates legendary 101-year-old former park ranger Betty Reid Soskin's inspiring life, work and urgent mission to restore critical missing chapters of America's story. The film follows her journey as an African American woman presenting her personal story from a kitchen stool in a national park theater to media interviews and international audiences who hang on every word she utters.

The documentary captures her fascinating life -- from the experiences of a young Black woman in a WWII segregated union hall, through her multi-faceted career as a singer, activist, mother, legislative representative and park planner to her public role at the national park.

At the Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park, Betty illuminated the invisible histories of African Americans and other people of color. Her efforts have changed the way the National Park Service conveys this history to audiences across the U.S., challenging us all to move together toward a more perfect union.
