The Great American Songbook is a collection of songs thought of as timeless pieces of music about love and heartbreak that have become familiar through many decades. Vocal artists have sung them throughout the years, and each one puts their own tempo and style into the song and lyrics. The songs are recognizable because they have been with us from the 1920's through the 1960's and heard continuously since. The heart of American sing-along pop music includes such songs as "Summertime" by George Gershwin and "Moon River" by Johnny Mercer. Judy Garland made the song "Over the Rainbow" famous in The Wizard of Oz, and it remains an American favorite. Every generation finds a connection with the familiar American songs with ballad lyrics that tell the story of life and love. Some are the most recognized tunes from well-known Broadway plays like "To Dream the Impossible Dream" from Man of La Mancha. The Masterworks Chorus will take these beloved American songs to the stage at the Royal Poinciana Chapel on May 18th at 7 PM.
