In celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Lighthouse tower, the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum presents a lecture series titled History in the Shadow of the Tower. The first lecture discusses the changes brought to St. Augustine and the State of Florida by America's entry in World War II. Eliot Kleinberg, former Palm Beach Post journalist and author, will present "War in Paradise: World War II in Florida" on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at the historic Waterworks building from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. RSVPs are required, but admission is free.
As a former military installation during World War II, the St. Augustine Lighthouse was under the control of the United States Coast Guard who stationed "Coasties" to monitored offshore shipping and patrolled local beaches. Museum staff will have artifacts from the World War II era available for viewing as well as information on the Lighthouse's military service during the war.
