Aurora Theatre returns with a live and in-person musical for a special limited engagement, Song and Dance by legendary musical theatre icon Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. The performance will be the first musical produced since the pandemic interrupted the run of the smash-hit, On Your Feet! The Story of Emilio & Gloria Estefan. This exceptional Broadway hit from the 1980s features a first act told solely through song while the second act is entirely through dance. The performance will feature India Tyree, in the tour-de-force role that won Bernadette Peters her first Tony Award, with accompaniment by cello virtuoso Noah Johnson.

Aurora Theatre is honored to be part of an exclusive club of producers allowed rights to this elusive title. According to the licensing company’s website, this will be the only production in the world at this time. The first act, a song cycle titled Tell Me on A Sunday, follows a newly transplanted English woman living in New York on a journey of self-discovery through her relationship missteps. The second act is told entirely through movement set to Lloyd Webber’s Variations based on Paganini’s Caprice in A minor. This act will feature eight dancers choreographed by Angela Harris (Executive Artistic Director of Dance Canvas) to comment and compliment the events portrayed in the song portion of the show. Two very different acts tied together by a unifying love story make for a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience from the creator of Cats, Evita and Phantom of the Opera

“I have been entranced by Song and Dance since the early 80s when my best friend returned from London and talked incessantly about how great this show was there. I have dreamed about producing it since,” says Aurora Theatre Co-Founder and Associate Producer Ann-Carol Pence. “I worked hard to get the opportunity to produce this show and know it will resonate with today’s audiences the same way it resonated with me. We are giving the piece a contemporary context. I cannot imagine a better way to demonstrate that ARTISTS are essential workers.”

The show also begins what is sure to be a long-term collaboration with Gwinnett County’s School of the Arts. Three faculty members from the new School of the Arts (SOTA) at Central Gwinnett High School are part of the production team. Set Designer Michael Tarver the Technical Director at SOTA, co-director Lilliangina Quiñones is the Theatre Department Chair at SOTA and Noah Johnson (mentioned above), who is a member of the SOTA Music Department Faculty. Aurora Theatre has always had a strong presence at Central Gwinnett and now that SOTA is in Lawrenceville that relationship is destined to grow. The impressive creative team is rounded out with Justin Anderson as co-director and Aurora Theatre Co-Founder and Associate Producer Ann-Carol Pence serves as music director.

Song and Dance will play a special limited engagement at Aurora Theatre from Aug. 28 – Sept. 12, with special socially distanced seating performances on Sept. 4 at 2:30 p.m. and Sept. 9 at 8 p.m. Tickets are currently on sale; single tickets start at $30 and may be purchased online here or by calling the Box Office at 678.226.6222. At this time, Aurora Theatre will allow full capacity seating and vaccinated patrons are not required to wear a mask. The situation is fluid.
