WHAT IS JUNETEENTH? Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. From its Galveston, Texas, origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.
Today, Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics, and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future.
The 1st Annual J.R. Crickets-S Cobb Juneteenth Festival, from 12 pm to 6 pm, is slated as a fun filled community day with over 100 exhibitors and vendors and a stage packed with live entertainment from local and regional artists! Complete with a Hot Wing-Eating contest, Father-Kid Look-A-Like contest and Daddy v/s Dat Kid Ol Skool v/s New School Dance Off and much more.
The kids can bounce on inflatables in the Kids Zone, and, of course, the shop-ping is second to none with unique gifts, hand-made quilts, jewelry, pottery, and experience a camping pod. Be sure and bring your sweet tooth! The J.R. Crickets-S Cobb Juneteenth Festival will also host 20+ dessert and sweet treat vendors! Admission and parking is free!
