As Concord's first Sustainability Director said, "We must electrify everything and green the grid." Can we pause the Climate Crisis panic and look at some low-hanging fruit solutions that would make a better life for everyone-particularly communities of color like Concord's METCO students and low-income communities? It is a matter of Climate Justice!
Let's start with the transportation of children. We'll watch and discuss some short informational videos on how converting school buses to electric could have a much bigger impact on our world than most people realize. Exposure to bus pollution can result in impaired lung development, brain development, and cognitive function. Communities of color and low-income communities like Concord's METCO students are disproportionately affected by this pollution. Sixty percent of low-income students ride the bus as opposed to 45 percent of non-low-income students, and Black students are more likely to ride the bus compared to non-Black students.
A lifelong learner, Pamela loves to look at the big questions and tackle the topics too hot for casual conversation: politics, religion, money, class, racism, abortion, truth, the Climate crisis. She's been an active advocate for helping Concord Municipal Light Plant achieve the sustainability goals the town has set.
