Juneteenth, a National Holiday, commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S. and celebrates our rich African American Cultural Heritage. Opens at noon with a presentation of the colors, official proclamations, special awards, a living history performance by Shemika Renee and a Wreath-Laying honoring the U.S. Colored Troops, including local Medal of Honor recipients.
The event will continue through the afternoon and into the evening with live music featuring the St. Peter Claver Men's Gospel Choir and the Sixx and System Band. African dance and drumming will be performed by Soul in Motion. There will be a variety of commercial and non-profit vendors, food trucks, as well as Bubbles and ponies for the youngsters! Activities in the United States Colored Troops Interpretive Center will include history exhibits, a genealogy workshop and presentation on The Lexington Manor "Flattops" by the St. Mary's County Historical Society and, for young people, Juneteenth crafts with Miss Darlene Barnes and a living history performance by Ms. Story!
Bring your lawn chairs and plan to stay a while!
