Experience the Runyon 5K at Yankee Stadium this September

On Thursday, September 29, 2022, the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation will hold the first in-person Runyon 5K at Yankee Stadium in more than three years, with 100% of funds raised directly supporting innovative cancer research by brilliant early career scientists. This year's event will be held during the week for the first time - and will feature a new route that includes an extra lap around the warning track under the lights at Yankee Stadium.

"We're excited to be back at Yankee Stadium after going virtual in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic," said Yung S. Lie, PhD, President and CEO of Damon Runyon. "This year, we are trying something new: holding the 5K on a weekday evening, so we're encouraging local companies to create corporate teams to participate, and hope to welcome back many of our loyal past participants. Although this is a fun event - drawing baseball fans, athletes, and people from all walks of life - many people participate because they have been touched by cancer and want to raise awareness and advance groundbreaking research."

The course traverses the ballpark's concourses, ramps, and stairs on multiple levels, and includes three laps around the warning track that circles the field. Participants have the unique opportunity to appear on the centerfield video board and meet the scientists whose research is supported by Damon Runyon - and who are also taking part in the 5K!

The 2022 Runyon 5K is presented by MetLife Foundation.

6:25 PM - Opening Remarks and Kickoff
6:30 PM - 5K Run/Walk Begins at Gate 4, with heats starting in 10-minute intervals

Registration: Participants can register at runyon5k.org for an early bird rate of $40 through July 20. The entry fee will increase to $45 from July 21 through September 21, and to $60 from September 22 through September 28. A reduced entry fee of $25 is available for children ages 5-12. 100% of donations raised by Runyon 5K participants will directly support bold and innovative young scientists pursuing new approaches to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of all forms of cancer. Since its inception in 2009, the Runyon 5K has attracted thousands of participants from all five boroughs of New York City and across the country - from cancer survivors and their friends and family members to runners and baseball fans - who run or walk through Yankee Stadium to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. In total, previous events have raised nearly $6 million to support the nation's most brilliant young scientists, who are pursuing cures for all forms of cancer.

The Runyon 5K marks the latest chapter in the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation's long history with the Yankees. After the Foundation's establishment in 1946, Joe DiMaggio was on its Board of Directors and Mickey Mantle was an active fundraiser. Damon Runyon, who died from throat cancer in 1946, was a New York writer who began his career as a baseball journalist. He revolutionized how the game was covered and often reported on Yankees games.
