The 92nd Street Y, New York announces 2024/25 Tisch Music Season

The 92nd Street Y, New York (92NY) today announced its 2024/25 Tisch Music Season. Over the past century and a half, 92NY has grown into one of New York City’s — and the world’s — most influential cultural institutions. This season builds exponentially on the organization’s rich history of presenting the best and most innovative musicians performing across a wide range of genres, from classical to jazz, advancing and expanding each genre through commissions and multi-disciplinary collaborations. With this, his first season as Executive Director of Tisch Music, Nicholas Russotto has created an exciting season including Four World, One U.S., and 19 New York Premieres, and returning Tisch Music favorites, expanding the scope of offered programming.

“The 2024/25 Tisch Music Season offers a rich kaleidoscope of vanguard artists and modern legends performing hallmarks of the repertoire as well as an array of contemporary music, a stage for some of the most forward-thinking artists in jazz, and an opportunity for iconic musical theater composers and legendary singer-songwriters to share their singular viewpoints on the American Songbook,” said Nicholas Russotto, Executive Director, Tisch Music. “I am thrilled to be leading Tisch in my first season as executive director and look forward to building seasons that consider the future of the performing arts, as we think expansively about the artists and the work that we feature on our stages.” 

Highlights of the 2024/25 Tisch Music Season include:

• Premieres of new works from Pulitzer Prize winners Caroline Shaw and Tyshawn Sorey, performances by acclaimed new music ensembles Sō Percussion and Wild Up, and many others;

• 29 92NY concert debuts, including by superstar early-music ensemble Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, phenom young supergroup OWLS, UK’s preeminent baroque ensemble Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and Grammy Award-winners Jordi Savall and Brad Mehldau;

• Expanded American Songbook offerings of exclusive concerts by Broadway icons Kelli O’Hara, Heather Headley, Alex Newell, and Darren Criss;

Australian Chamber Orchestra: The Ottoman Four Seasons

The Australian Chamber Orchestra returns to 92NY to explore Vivaldi’s masterpiece through the lens of the Ottoman Empire. The Venice of Vivaldi’s world was one of the great cosmopolitan centers of its time, absorbing influences from the Middle East, North Africa, and beyond. In The Ottoman Four Seasons, the ACO performs Vivaldi’s work in its entirety, joined by oud virtuoso Joseph Tawadros and riq master James Tawadros, who add their original compositions in this multimedia event.

Caroline Shaw, Alicia Olatuja+ & Sō Percussion: Rectangles and Circumstance

Pulitzer Prize- and triple Grammy-winning composer and vocalist Caroline Shaw, vocalist Alicia Olatuja, and chamber music ensemble Sō Percussion join in a new collaboration. Shaw and Sō perform music from their new Nonesuch album Rectangles and Circumstance, with verses culled from poems by Christina Rosetti, Emily Brontë, Emily Dickinson, Gertrude Stein, and William Blake. Olatuja – who came to national attention with her performance at President Obama’s second inauguration – joins the ensemble for Narrow Sea, Shaw’s setting of a text from The Sacred Harp, which earned her a 2021 Grammy for Best Contemporary Classical Composition.

Angela Hewitt returns for her first solo program since spring of 2022 – the concert that completed her epic four-year Bach Odyssey – to perform a core repertoire program. Hewitt opens with Mozart – her current touring and recording focus – before Handel’s Chaconne in G Major, a work that sets up a grand finale of Brahms’ Handel Variations.

Individually, the members of chamber music supergroup Junction Trio have appeared at 92NY; this season they join as a trio. Their expansive program includes the second piano trio by Shostakovich and the world premiere of a new work by John Zorn, concluding with Brahms’ Piano Trio in B Major, Op. 8.

JACK Quartet celebrates its 20th-anniversary season in 2024/25. The quartet – violinists Christopher Otto and Austin Wulliman, violist John Pickford Richards, and cellist Jay Campbell – returns to 92NY with music from Eduardo Aguilar’s HYPER, Seare Farhat’s Aporias, Juri Seo’s Three Imaginary Chansons and the New York Premiere of a new work by Anthony Cheung.

Pacifica Quartet – American Snapshots: JFK, Vietnam, and Ellis Island

The Grammy Award-winning Pacifica Quartet returns to 92NY with a reflective concert shaped around three pivotal chapters in American history. The program moves from Barber’s Adagio for Strings, a soundtrack to the days following the assassination of John F. Kennedy, to George Crumb’s Black Angels, written in response to the Vietnam War – a work popularized by the Kronos Quartet – to Dvořák’s “American” Quartet, its fusion of European and American impulses intended by the quartet to point to Ellis Island and the immigrant experience.

Classical guitarist Ana Vidovic returns to the stage where she made her US debut following studies with the legendary Manuel Barrueco, bringing a program of Baroque and Spanish guitar works in selections by Bach, Scarlatti, Torroba, Barrios’ La Catedral, and a solo performance of a guitar masterwork, Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez.

Catalyst Quartet: Intersections

The Grammy Award-winning Catalyst Quartet returns with an exploration of music at the crossroads of Ravel, Gershwin, Latin jazz, and tango. The program culminates in Ravel’s String Quartet, revealing impulses that became influences for the evening’s other three composers. The Latin-inspired works are rounded out with the addition of Gershwin’s Lullaby – a piece premiered by the Juilliard String Quartet and rarely performed in its original version.

Early-music ensemble Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin comes to 92NY for the first time in a rare NYC engagement to perform the German Baroque works that are their signature. Two of the orchestra’s soloists, oboist Xenia Löffler and concertmaster Georg Kallweit, present this program of masterworks by Bach and Telemann, including a little-performed work by J.B. Bach, from whom J.S. took inspiration.

MacArthur “Genius” Grant recipient Jeremy Denk returns with a program juxtaposing a pair of Beethoven sonatas with rags by Joplin and William Bolcom and culminating in the program’s second half with Ives’ Transcendentalist masterwork, the mammoth “Concord” Sonata. As Denk says, “This year marks the 150th birthday of Charles Ives—one of the wildest imaginations of American music. Charles Ives didn’t just want to mix popular and classical music. He wanted to erase the distinction, to see how various traditions and musics share the same spark, and get after the same truths.”

Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment+ & Julia Bullock, soprano+: The Golden Age of the Baroque

UK Baroque ensemble Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment makes its first 92NY appearance joined by Grammy Award-winning Julia Bullock in her own 92NY debut. Bullock, who the Los Angeles Times has called “an essential soprano for our times,” made headlines in her Metropolitan Opera debut this season in John Adams’ El Niño. Together, they perform the greatest hits of the Baroque era – arias by Purcell and Handel, including “Let the Bright Seraphim,” alongside instrumental masterworks by Bach, Handel, Lully, Rameau, and Vivaldi.

Pablo Ferrández makes his New York City recital debut, a protégé of Anne-Sophie Mutter and hailed by Le Figaroas “a new cello genius.” Ferrández appears with pianist Julio Elizalde to perform some of the great works of the cello repertoire: Beethoven’s Sonata in A Major, Op. 69, Brahms’ Sonata in E Minor, Op. 38, and more.

Returning to 92NY following their 2022 debut, the Dover Quartet, Curtis Institute of Music’s Quartet in Residence, is joined by Sphinx Medal of Excellence winner and Curtis alum Michelle Cann. The New Yorker called the Dover Quartet “the young American string quartet of the moment,” while Gramophone has called Cann “a pianist of sterling artistry.” Hear these American artists in a masterwork of American chamber music – Dvořák’s Piano Quintet No. 2 in A Major, plus additional works to be announced.

The Salzburg-based Hagen Quartet returns following an acclaimed cycle of the complete Beethoven Quartets at 92NY a decade ago. Performing together for more than 40 years, they bring their refined European style of quartet playing to works by Haydn and Schumann in a rare appearance.

Tenor Ian Bostridge, joined by pianist Julius Drake, performs Schubert’s masterpiece Winterreise, about which he literally wrote the book– 2015’s Schubert’s Winter Journey: Anatomy of an Obsession. Bostridge has performed Winterreise hundreds of times around the world, going deeper into the psychological journey of its 24 poems with every encounter.

Kennedy Center honoree and UN Messenger for Peace, Midori returns with pianist Özgür Aydin for a recital of music at the heart of her artistry. She opens with Brahms’ G-Major Sonata and Poulenc’s Violin Sonata, with its touches of Parisian character, before a pair of pieces by Ravel. The concert closes with one of Midori’s signature works, the composer’s Tzigane, which she performed in her recital debut 30-plus years ago.

Sphinx Medal of Excellence winner Karen Slack joins us with the New York premiere of her multimedia work African Queens. The original work features new art songs exploring the legacy of seven African queens through history who were revered as rulers but under-celebrated in the western world, and weaves its narrative through music by some of today’s leading African and American composers: Damien Geter, Jessie Montgomery, Carols Simon, and others. Slack is noted for her performances in the Metropolitan Opera’s world premiere of Terence Blanchard’s Fire Shut Up in My Bones, Tyler Perry’s film For Colored Girls, and more.

The Finnish string quartet Meta4 makes a rare US appearance – and their NYC mainstage debut – with a program examining adult love in all its nuances and complexities. Apart from the cellist, the ensemble performs standing up, allowing for freedom of both movement and expression. Declarations of Love begins with Janacek’s manifesto on love “Intimate Letters,” inspired by the letters he exchanged with his young muse, Kamila Stösslová. British composer Sally Beamish’s Nine Fragments/String Quartet No. 4 is inspired by Robert Schumann’s A-Minor String Quartet. In this Art of the Guitar event, guitarist and longtime series artistic director Ben Verdery joins us for the final concert of his performing career. 92NY’s Art of the Guitar is now in its 27th year, with Verdery serving as artistic director for 13 seasons, beginning in 2007. As curator of the series, he championed young artists, expanded the guitar repertoire with new commissions, presented premieres by masters including Egberto Gismonti, Sérgio Assad, Tan Dun, and others, ran Guitar Marathons, hosted a series of Guitar Talks, and more. A collaborator above all, Verdery is joined by special guests for an evening of music composed by him as part of his longtime Some Towns and Cities project, and a celebration of his contributions to all things classical guitar.

Winner of the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Music, composer and multi-instrumentalist Tyshawn Sorey and his trio – pianist Aaron Diehl and bassist Harish Raghavan – and Sandbox Percussion celebrate the legacy of legendary drummer, composer and activist Max Roach on his centenary. Roach, who played with Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk and other jazz icons, had a deep and little-known connection to The 92nd Street Y, curating a concert series in the 1990s, and performing with artists including Lester Bowie, Julius Hemphill, Christian McBride, and others. Sorey shares a deep affinity with Roach – as a jazz drummer, a curator, a composer, an arranger, and an endlessly inventive artist in each of those roles. Long a champion of Roach’s music, the trio and the quartet each play sets of music inspired by Roach. The forces come together in the concert’s second half for the New York premiere of a new work by Sorey co-commissioned by 92NY.

The impact of composer and lyricist Jonathan Larson (Rent; Tick, Tick, Boom) on musical theater – and the creators who have followed him – is given the spotlight in this new Lyrics & Lyricists show from a collaborator who was there from the start. The show’s artistic director, James Nicola, former artistic director of New York Theater Workshop – the small East Village theater where Rent was first workshopped – shares the stories about Larson only he can tell. “As passionate, unpretentious and powerful as anything I’ve heard in musical theater for more than a decade,” wrote The New Yorker about Rent when it opened on Broadway.
