From a once-thriving medieval community to one of the smallest Jewish communities in Europe today, with only 150 Jews remaining, Slovenia’s Jewish community has survived cruel medieval expulsions and the ravages of the wars of the twentieth century, only to find itself eroding even more during subsequent years of socialist rule. In this live, virtual tour, attendees will visit sites within Ljubljana’s old Jewish Quarter. Tourists will explore Slovenia’s Jewish history, culture, and heritage. The tour guide will also discuss Jewish life in a Christian society and talk about the city’s notable Jewish residents. On the tour, the guide will share how some Slovenian Jews survived WWII, and what happened to the Jewish community during the communist regime in the former Yugoslavia.
This is a virtual event. Admission is $18 for Museum of Jewish Heritage members and $36 for non-Museum members.
