JOHNSON CITY – Saturday, February 15, 2025, 7:30PM – The Johnson City Symphony Orchestra will present its first concert of 2025: Hope and Honor at the ETSU Martin Center. This event will feature local composers from the past and present, a local guest artist, and an orchestral world premiere!
The JCSO will premiere Keep Singin’ by local composer Mildred Ellis. Ellis was born in 1906 and grew up in Johnson City, attending Langston School where she graduated as valedictorian in 1924. In 1947, Ellis produced the “Negro Music Festival” that was a celebration of Black concert music performed by Black musicians from east Tennessee for an integrated audience on the then-segregated campus of East Tennessee State College. At Ellis’s memorial service in 2004, National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice referred to Ellis as “a wonderful, proud African-American pioneer.” The JCSO is proud to present this world premiere event.
In addition to Ellis’s world premiere, Dr. Steph Frye-Clark will perform Tuba Concerto by Martin Ellerby with the JCSO. Dr. Frye-Clark is a highly sought-after and internationally recognized performer and educator. They are currently Associate Professor of Tuba and Ephonium at East Tennessee State University where they have been on faculty since 2013.
Other repertoire for this concert includes Procession of the Animals from Deluge! by local composer Evelyn Pursley-Kopitzke and Negro Folk Symphony by William Dawson.
Tickets are $40 for adults and $10 for children and students (plus tax). ETSU and Milligan students will receive a free ticket at the door with a valid Student ID.
Advanced tickets are available through the ETSU Martin Center Box Office, 423-239-2787, or online at http://www.ETSUMartinCenter.org. The full season program can be viewed there and at jcsymphony.com.
